3 Bizarre Colombian Food Combinations That Are Delicious

When you visit another country, do you seek out the weird and unusual or avoid it? What about weird and unusual food combinations? What if they are so ingrained in the culture that the country doesn’t realize its food combinations are strange to others?

While living in Colombia, these three Colombian food combinations are normal to those living there, but I found them bizarre to foreigners.

Hot Chocolate with Cheese

1. Hot Chocolate With Cheese

This is a magical combination, especially if you like cheese and chocolate. Why not combine them? It was possibly the strangest combination, but now it is one of my favorites. The cheese is not any type of cheese but Queso Colombiano.

Also, hot chocolate is not what we in the US are used to; it is darker and not as sweet. Most of the weird combinations in Colombia involve cheese.

Helado con queso

2. Helado con Queso: Ice Cream with Cheese

My boyfriend is Colombian. He orders this 9/10 when we go out for ice cream. When he ordered it I asked him, are you joking? He looked at me like I was the crazy one. Seriously, ice cream and cheese?

Who does that? Colombians, they do. Believe it or not, it’s also delicious! I rarely order it. I am a cone kind of girl. When he gets it though, I always take 1–2 or 5 bites of his, saying why didn’t I get that.

Next Time! I always forget and get a cone! When you visit Colombia, please try Helado con Queso!

3. Palito de Queso con Guayaba: Guava and Cheese

Deep-fried dough with cheese and guayaba inside it. This is amazing! Probably my favorite out of the 3. Here, we get it at an empanada stand.

It is great for the vegetarians in the group. It is usually the only thing without meat!
